7 September, 1939 ENGAGING OF FEMALES The following is a guide as to the number of females you are to engage for your branch: a) Make up your staff to your full complement bearing in mind that a large proportion of those engaged may not turn up or may prove unsatisfactory. b) As any staff leave (male or female) endeavour to replace them. c) Over and above (a) and (b) you are to endeavour to carry surplus females according to the following table: CHEESE DEPARTMENT 1 female training on irrespective of the size of the department. COOKED MEATS ditto EGG DEPARTMENT ditto BUTTER DEPARTMENT 1 female training on for every two blocks. BACON DEPARTMENT 1 " " if your normal staff is 2 2 " " " " " " "4 GROCERY 1 " " " " " " "1 or 2 Or 2. 2 " " " " " " "More than 2. POULTRY SHOP Those branches that have a large poultry department is to have one female training one. BLOCK You will also have as far as possible one female training on the Poultry Block, but will realise that rather a different type of woman will be required for this work. MEAT DEPARTMENT For the time being there will be no females training on this department as butchers or cutters but they can very usefully be employed assisting the men by wrapping, etc. (A few older male butchers will be of very great use). The idea is that these women should be trained ready to take the place of those who will leave. When, for example, a man leaves, one of these women must be ready to take his place and a new female engaged to be trained-on. It is absolutely imperative that the women you are engaging and will have to continue to engage must be made capable to take the place of men, and that can only be done if they are put to work by the side of the man so that they can continually be told and learn. As a result of the staff we are now engaging we may at certain times of the week have rather more than required. Then will be the opportunity for those qualified to do a little teaching; not for the unnecessary numbers of males and females to be standing behind the counters waiting to serve. |
