Sainsbury's first shop, at 173 Drury Lane, opened in 1869. Two years later, in April 1871, the census enumerator recorded the presence of four familes, including John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury and their young son John John Benjamin living in the four floors above the shop. Each family probably occupied only two or three rooms.
