This pie box lid dates from the 1920s. The pie it contained would have been made in Sainsbury's kitchens at Blackfriars, London.
The 'famous' meat pies were displayed unwrapped on the cooked meats counter and placed in cardboard boxes for presentation to the customer. Sainsbury's continued to manufacture its own pies until 1972.
