1911 price: 5.5d 2001 price: 39p Cream has lost much of its 1911 status as a premium product, partly because its high fat content has lead many people to select ‘healthier’ alternatives such as yogurt and fromage frais. Its relative cheapness today owes much to the fact that cream is now a by-product of the production of reduced-fat milks. In 1911, skimmed milk was regarded as an inferior product for which there was little market: today it is popular as a reduced fat alternative to whole milk. The price comparison given here understates the relative fall in the price of cream, because the pottery jug in which it was sold was smaller than today’s 142ml tub. |
