1911 price: 1s 6d

2001 price: £2.55

Coffee is much more popular today than it was in 1911, with a huge choice of different blends. Increased production has encouraged economies of scale in coffee processing, but better pay for plantation workers has tended to increase the relative price of the raw material. The 2001 price is the normal one for a 454g pack of Sainsbury’s original blend, which was actually on special offer at £2.45.
