2001 price: 75p In 1911, much of the fruit consumed by ordinary people was preserved, either in jams, or by canning and bottling. The higher relative price in 1911 reflects the more labour intensive methods used for fruit-picking and processing than today, and also the higher relative cost of sugar. The fruit content of most types of jam is higher today than it was in 1911. |
