KS2 Victorian Britain
Description of the Activities
There is a range of activities to reflect the abilities and enthusiasms found in the typical classroom. All pupils do not necessarily have to do all the activities and some activities are designed to take place in front of and some away from the computer.
All the activities include pupils’ activity sheets to help them record and plan their work.

Young workers at Sainsbury’s in the 1890s
1. Collect information about young workers (type of work, hours, pay, living conditions etc) in the retail trade in the 1890s.

2. Write an imaginary letter home after the first month at work.

3. Produce a newspaper advert for an ‘egg-boy’ at Sainsbury's.

Adult workers at Sainsbury’s in the 1890s

1. Look at the relationship between jobs and gender in Victorian Britain.

2. Plan a biography of Mary Ann Sainsbury, one of the co-founders.

Delivering the goods

1. Complete a cloze exercise about a day in the life of a delivery boy in the 1900s.

2. Use a number of historical sources to complete a CV for a delivery boy in the 1900s.

Sources of food

1. Collect information about the sources of food in Victorian Britain.

2. Find out what transport was used.

3. Examine how the state of technology influenced how Sainsbury’s stored its food and designed its shops.

Using historical sources

1. Search for answers to specific questions which highlight the range of sources used in the site.

2. Consider the reliability of these sources.

Planning a Victorian shop

1. Collect information on store location, interior and exterior design and product display techniques.

2. Use this information to produce a floor plan, a shop front design and a report justifying decisions made.

3. Plan and produce a newspaper front page (on paper or using ICT), celebrating the opening of a new shop in the 1890s.

Further suggestions
