In 1911, eggs were
relatively expensive, and it was very common to buy one or two eggs at a time.
Eggs tended to be a sideline for farmers - chickens were often kept by
farmers’ wives to earn pin-money. Mass
production of eggs has reduced the price substantially, and was a significant
factor in increasing the availability of high-protein foods after the second
world war. Even free-range eggs,
which today are produced on a large scale, are relatively significantly
cheaper, at £1.05 for six, than they were in 1911.
